In honor of the publication’s return to existence, I’ve unearthed, reconfigured, and tweaked the quintessential mix of oddness and acceptability. These original AO tunes are the original reason I started courting whiskely warriors way back in the forgotten past of ’07.
Originally fashioned as a mix to bolster a Radio show hosted by the Beard’s boss, this compilation of both obscure and obvious femmes reaches across the ages, plucking everything from original-era rockabilly to renegade post-punk. What began as a small assignment grew as the true task presented itself: link women across the eras, not by sound, but by ambition and attitude,.
Whether or not they were always acknowledged, women have been instrumental in every musical movement of the modern age, thus this compendium of awesome spans 50 years and touches both the utterly accessible and outer edges.
The common thread? None of these ladies are dancing for the Man, none of them care a toss for convention, and all of these women absolutely, positively rock.
