In celebration of 100 years of acceptable awesome, I’ve reminted my most popular mix of all time. While several years have passed, this mix was never a relic of an exact moment in time, more a feeling, an aesthetic, and and excuse to let loose. As I said at the time, it was:
A Manifesto for Fun….
It’s true, in my whiskerly wanderings I happen upon some genuinely obscure-ass albums (everything from long-lost anthologies of dutch electronic tape music to grand symphonies for deftly orchestrated armpits). While this is all well and good (and generally pretty enjoyable), it also leads many to say, often quite explicitly, that I hate fun. Ok, yeah, I dig Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music in earnest. But who says I can’t slut it up with lady pop after hours?
Thus it is that I began a project to make you guys a mix tape with an ear to the un-obscure. I wanted to give you something fun. And, more to the point, I wanted to put some of my most-played songs in one place so I could dance and sing along on the subway (I really do so this when no one I know is around — people look at me REALLY weird). While this summer compilation isn’t quite radio ready, it does represent some of my more vapish and/or obsessive indulgences over the last few months, and with the exception of Amanda Palmer, which is new, nothing on here has less than 40 listens in Itunes. Have fun with it…
