The Beard Presents: SOUL CLAP!

THIS TUNE IS FOR: The hardest working men (and women) in show business…

AO 18 – Soul Clap from thebeard on 8tracks Radio.

“She is sooooooo (so sweet and tender) / And I’m Glaaaad (so glad, we made it girl) / She is sooooooo (so sweet and tender) /
So glad we’re making love… -Raphael Saddiq “Love That Girl”
It’s stylish to say that we’ve forsaken soul, especially in indie, but the idea that we’ve been numbed to that body-wracking ’60s stomp is simply insane. The underground has spent the last 5 years discovering emotion, and more than a few pop sensations have emerged with the horn-ridden fanfare. Whether it was Eli “Paperboy” Reed touting soul nights in Brooklyn basements, Jeff Tweedy producing the legendary Mavis Staples, or indie hip-hop/pop prince Cee-lo mischief-making in Elton John outfits, the field is filled with new, credible cuts.
On SOUL CLAP, we explore some of the more interesting and accessible artists to emerge. Singers like Raphael Saadiq, Jaime Lidell, and Mayer Hawthorne show us that the new school can rival the originals, while old dogs like Sharon Jones, Mavis Staples, and Gil-Scott Heron prove that they aren’t quite done kicking. Meanwhile, Janelle Monae, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Florence + the Machine add a bit of indie and hip-hop inspiration without wrecking things on either end.
But let’s not over-intellectualize. These songs aren’t up for analysis: they’re for feeling. So, get ready for some gruntin’; the time has come to roll your body right. Trust me. This baby will light up an evening (especially after the lights go out), just as easily as it kicks off a backyard BBQ.
