A testament to the jewels that emerge in any exotic ’80s excavation, Kiwi weird-out act the Moles were the stewards of skittering indie-psych when Neutral Milk was still an abstract. Akin to the flying nunnery of Tall Dwarfs and the Clean, this Richard Davies-driven outfit spun pretty deeply into the ether, emerging with a fusion of indie-psych, ’60s pop, and punk with a suite of wry, oddball anthems. Collecting the complete output of the group’s initial incarnation (a second cd is dedicated to its later, fractured forms), this collection is more than a landmark of lo-fi: it’s a stark reminder to new millennium indie kids that boundaries are made to be broken.
