An obscurist’s obscurity, Chicago act ONO’s brief ’80s stint in soul-skewed post-punk was largely overshadowed by a louder movement of New York No Wavers. Reunited with an uncommon energy, the band’s recent reemergence is marked by a bizarre hybrid of funk-tinged punk rock, soul proselytising, and squelching instrumental abstraction. A bit difficult, I’ll admit, but every bit an original.
