A patron saint of punk (and every alternative moment to come after), Lou Barlow wasn’t just a driving force behind celebrated indie acts Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and the Folk Implosion. Somehow, in between garnering critical acolytes with those acts, he recorded scores and scores of bedroom tapes on his own. Recently unearthed and recalibrated, “Brand New Love” is an introspective love poem of the sweetest sort, a stunning entry point to an esoteric tape universe that isn’t always so easy to understand.
