A down-luck folkie if ever there was one, Dave Van Ronk knew all the right people (as far as ’60s East Village superstars, he actually PRE-DATED Dylan). But, whether because of temperament, vice, or some other great intangible, it was his lot to be passed over, as his similarly situated friends and collaborators one by one ascended to the greatest heights imaginable.
In some ways the Cohen Brothers’ recent film based on Ronk’s life gave him some of the attention his life is due. But it isn’t his story that’s most striking: it’s the maudlin blues-folk the journey itself inspired.
