Oft-mistaken for the Blind Boys of Alabama, the original Blind Boys were more than inspired proponents of the mid-century’s hard gospel movement: They were a bulwark of the soul age to come after. At times Sam Cooke smooth, at others James Brown enormous, these songs of celebration have all the markings of ’50s and ’60s super-stunners, religious or otherwise.
Tragically, these more secular cuts had long fallen into obscurity. And so, it’s with enormous excitement that I exhume them in a Wax Atlas exclusive. What say we have us a real deep revival?
