Far from the scorched Earth of Regan’s indulgence America, the Flying Lizards built a multi-disciplinary critique of the increasingly bleached ’80s with more sting and more sass than any other UK art-rock act before or after. Stripping James Brown’s “Sex Machine” to its mechanical elements, this cover is new wave in its starkest incarnation, an anti-soul robot dance so weird that its affront is only outstripped by its odddity.
