While UK-rockers would later push the bounds of avant-garde pop to the brink of absurdity, their debut stood at the nexus of ’60s psych, ’70s rock, and an age of early synth experimentation. A moderate rock affair, the album at points pre-figures everything from the epic operatics of Queen and Bowie glamage, to the tinny oddball electricity of new wave. Astrally minded, sure, but at this point Sparks were still very much of this world.
