Michael Gira occupies his own demoned corner in the shadowed, untidy annals of dark art. In the ’80s, post-punk, proto-industrial NYC act Swans was perhaps the most extreme musical apparatus in existence. Resurrected, Gira’s evil plaything is as unwieldy and uncompromising as ever, an overwhelming force of cacophonous, experimental orchestration.
A harrowing, and ultimately cathartic, listen, To Be Kind grips the body and mind in a deep stone massage of wails and thickly confronting ambiance, battering the bones and unlocking muscles you weren’t aware were missing. Not for the light of heart or the casual acquaintance, this record is a spiritual tool for exhuming ego. Challenging, contemplative and undeniably amazing.
