A San Francisco garage/psych institution of enormous influence, the Chocolate Watch Band arrived in 1967 with every bit the swagger of the Stones, the dark brood of the Doors, and the psych-out ambience of a Haight-Ashbury busker on acid.
It’s a tragedy, then, that the group burned out by 1970, before the scene became a zeitgeist propelling its stars to the vanguard of international attention. Still, No Way Out is a classic every bit the equal of its contemporary’s, a weird-out album of the most pleasantly epic proportions.
