The bridge between hardcore, punk, and a post-hardcore approach that would help define the dominant ’90s indie aesthetic, “Waiting Room” is the ultimate anti-anthem. Steeped in proto-Gen X angst, Ian Mackaye pines to the dull ineptitudes of inaction, relegating all hope to hew idea of escape. The band’s later work was more politically potent, but they were never quite as catchy, subtle or relatable again.
