While Jorge Ben was certainly associated with Brazil’s late-’60s Tropicalia movement, his music was equally acclaimed in the country’s the folk and samba scenes. By 1971, he had come into his own: Forca Bruta skirts the edges of then-modern MDB, while also offering open nods to legends like Jao Gilberto. Swinging, while at the same time seductive, the record beams with soft light, a nighttime ambience to cool the nerves or, perhaps, ensnare those of another.
