After a slew of field recordings and a ramshackle studio stint, inimitably haunting ’30s bluesman Skip James disappeared into the woodwork of real life. It wasn’t until the ’60s that the transcendent, unearthly tone of songs like “Devil Got My Woman” sent superstar guitarist John Fahey searching for the source. What he found was an unassuming old man whose ghostly falsetto could still rattle cages. While the early recordings are truly amazing, this set of ’60s re-recordings of classic cuts retains the deep soul, and playful picking, while cutting the shameful production and distracting hiss of the originals.
