Yes, despite my all-beardly inclinations, even I miss one from time to time. Luckily, so did everyone else… A slow-burning breakout if ever there was one, Geographer’s debut EP couldn’t be more pleasantly of the moment, even years after it came out. Soft-swirling poppers flirt with electro ambiance as subtle, full-bodied strings court the singer’s croon.
It’s Jens Lekman, meets Ra Ra Riot, as a Casio remix. Or LCD Soundsystem, with Arthur Rusell orchestration. Cut it any way you want it — these guys have tapped something organic at the source of indie and extracted it.
Like the Xx, the band courts the separating space around each instrument — warmth within rigidity — but the beat still drives the body to twist warmly in excess. Said better, their “simplistic” orchestrations are enormous.
