Outside of Kurt Cobain, no grunge-era doom preacher captured the angst of Gen-X with the delicate grace of Elliott Smith. At his most insightful and caTCHY (it’s relative, remember), the under-celebrated XO embodies a range of emotions, often necking up from Smith’s shadow-world to embrace some sun. More often, though, his poetic, incisive ruminations and haunting lilt ring true with the difficult ideas of a soothsayer too attuned, and too perfect, to live in a world as broken as ours.
