New Wave indie with a pop aesthetic and surf ambiance, The Drums’ Summertime! ep engages the late-oughts Beach Boys obsession without devolving into full-on Brian Wilson worship. While the record’s songs are jaunty surfside twisters with a rollicking backbeat, the lyrics are often unexpectedly maudlin, wry and unexpected. The line “this is the saddest summer ever” isn’t accurate, but 2010 certainly was a bizarre one by the beach.
