When it comes to the echoed-out psychedelics of Jamaican dub, a bit of self-aware kitsch is to be expected, even embraced. Without it the mammoth Jah notions are a little harder to swallow, at least un-stoned. Within the spectrum of acceptable absurdity, King Tubby protege Scientist’s conceptual albums about space invaders, sports titans and such are compositionally earnest, astoundingly interesting albums, couched in an equal entertainment. Experimental (for the early ‘80s) electronics add space-age verve to entrancing rhythms and some of the sickest rhythms and echoes ever recorded.
