By the end of 2013 NYC electronic experimentalists Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington were a critically acclaimed, powerhouse revivalist act, brilliantly updating the proto-prog psychedelics of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon for a techno age. With all the accolades, it’s easy to forget that the collaboration was originally a one-off EP project, and that the original tracks were given away for free.
Possessing every bit of the full-length’s elegance, the Darkside EP is an equally pure, if perhaps less pretentious, outing. Unaware of the project’s future appeal, Jaar and Harrington are more playful, less rushed, and ultimately less guarded. Not to say that last year’s Psychic isn’t a worthy effort: as with the band that inspired them, no true fan stops without exploring the deep and abiding energy of every single album.
