While time and bearded reevaluation have exalted Weezer’s devilshly inspired second album, Pinkerton, as the band’s best, their debut had an infinitely greater impact and appeal. A series of wry observations, nerd-tickling tropes, and anti-cool anthems, Blue was everything ’90s alternative got right, a rallying cry and conversion point for outcasts everywhere.
Almost 30 years later it feels as warm and iconic as ever, a slacker classic that will never go out of style (if simply because style is what it so brilliantly built itself against).
