Experimental producer Madlib (aka Quasimoto) can always be counted on to drum up unlikely beats. In this collaboration with more hardcore MC Freddie Gibbs, Lib is at his most, dropping warm, layered tracks that are both oddball and swamped with soul. For his part, Gibbs rhymes with ecstatic flow, blending new and old-school techniques with an impressive, and uncommon, ease. As a result, Pinata lands just where it should, straddling the gangsta/backpack rap divide while doing fair justice to advocates on either end.
