The childlike wonder of underground ’70s institution the Modern Lovers stems almost exclusively from the whimsical rantage of Jonathan Richman. The singer’s cartoonish baritone caterwauls more than croons, seeding jaunty rock riffs with one punchline after another. This live rendition of “Ice Cream Man” is as representative as anything of his deep love of doo-wop and early rock, as well as the the very specific treat it exults.
