Though Nico’s collaboration with the Velvet Underground certainly greyed the super-models disposition, it wasn’t until years later that a true dark attached itself. A contemplative proto-goth epic, Desertshore posits a post-hippie apocalypse bound by the kind of barren, dispossessed ideologies associated with deep opiate addiction. Nico meets drones and simple funereal organs with deep-throated incantations, an earthless tone that’s at once beautiful, lost, tragic, and deeply inspiring in its earnestness.
