Over the course of 20 years, German indie act the Notwist has gained a reputation with two distinct assurances: long waits between albums and unanticipated deviations when they inevitably arrive. This time, the curveball manifests in a driving fuzz that restrains the band’s mechanical impulses in favor of an underpinning pop structure. It’s still herky-jerky — catchy pulses mellowed by immediate restraint — but, then, that’s also its appeal. Awkward, perhaps, but all the more affecting inside of it.
