Cheesy movie soundbites aside, the Shins’ Oh Inverted World was absolutely a life-changing album. But it wasn’t mastermind James Mercer’s first collection of pitch-perfect indie pop. The Shins in all but name, Flake Music managed an impressive debut before morphing into the significantly more acclaimed act.
When You Land Here It’s Time to Return is peppered with melodies every bit as pristine as a Shins album, without the later restraints of expectation. Mercer explores geek rock and flirts with Built to Spill-style keens before returning to what he does best: sing-along indie anthems that cut straight to the center.
