German free jazz pioneer Peter Brötzmann treats his sax less like an instrument than an air siren, skronking with the intensity of a pilot calling in an attack. 40 years removed from his seminal Machine Gun (perhaps the most abrasive jazz record ever engineered), his style remains equally inventive, abrasive and astounding.
Teamed with a champion rhythm section (Hamid Drake and William Parker are each astounding artists on their own”), this 2002 cut is at turns rhythmic and atonal, a classic cool encasing an intriguingly untidy anarchy.
